Best Income Protection insurance

10/13/2009 12:21 AM

Whenever I get advice there seems to be a lot of info that I have to read. I just want to know what is the best income protection insurance for me. Is this too much to ask?

Hi John
I hear what your saying but here is the problem. To find the best income protection insurance for you we would first gather general details about you (like age, occupation, smoking status etc). Then from the 20 plus options, we like to point you in the right direction because each policy vary slightly and we do not want to you to have any suprises when you need to claim. Unfortunately most people only ever read the fine print when they need to claim.

Let me give you a very real and quick example - some policies will pay you while you are unable to work in your 'own' occupation and then after 2 years reverts to an 'any' occupation. This type of policy will be cheaper than others and if that does not concern you then this cheaper option may be the best income protection insurance for you. But for others they would feel like they are getting ripped off and do not want to waste their money on these cheaper options.

Difference b/w Permanent disability & income protection

10/09/2009 12:15 AM

I have Total & Permanent disability insurance (TPD) through my superannuation. Is the permanent disability definition different to what I get under a loss of income insurance? Why would I need both?

Brett Grant - SA

Hi Brett
Both types of insurance are very different. The total & permanent disability insurance will pay a lump sum once you have been considered never to be able to work again for the rest of your normal working life. This usually need to be confirmed by two medical practioners. A cheaper total & permanent disability definition insurance will only pay out if you cannot work in 'ANY' occupation. The better ones will pay out if you cannot work in your 'OWN' occupation.
An income protection benefit will pay a replacement income for each month that you cannot work in your own occupation due to any accident or any illness. It does not have to be permanent. Income protection benefit is very flexible and the most commonly claimed personal insurance.
